Howard Zinn and His Mind
Introduction
Radical, genocide, those are
words which can express who Howard Zinn is. Howard
Zinn as a historian of America has electrified many people in the world by his
book ‘Speaking Truth to Power with Books’ and change
the view about Columbus as a hero who had discovered America. Zinn is a brave man. He has changed human’s mind about history
of Columbus who some people know about it as a discoverer of America. He had
revealed that Columbus is a killer, violent, and evil man who came to America
only for taking gold from that place. From that article I got new knowledge
about the truth of history, although Zinn did not reveal who discoverer of
America was.
Summary
In this section I will summary
from Howard Zinn’s article. Here there are some point which written by Howard
Zinn about Columbus. First, the reason Columbus went sailing. Columbus raping the one of Spanish
nobeleman’s daughter who was 13 years old. The Courts
cannot decide he should be put to death, so that, Queen Isabella sent him on a
mission looking for a new continent. In that time the main goal is to find
India and with expectations, Columbus cannot go back to Spanish.
Second,
Motivation Columbus'
exploration is to be a messenger for a non-Christian. And the last is about Columbus Journal which in the journal told him when first
landed in America blue continent, at that time he still thinks that this is
Indian land. At that time the natives greeted Columbus with joy.
Howard Zinn in his article
also told about the bad thing from Columbus which told Columbus as a Killer,
violent, and another thing. So that there are disagreement about the real
discoverer of America.
Critique
History is something which
can show about a country in the past period about the bright or the darkness
incident from that country. However, history is something which is so important
for every country, because from history a government and people who live in
that country can learn what they have to do for developing their country.
Sometimes the history of the bad thing is hidden by some people which are not
responsible and consider it as a shame. So that they only tell about the bright
thing from the country. Actually every country have to know all about it’s
history for learning, but there are some country did not show the real fact
itself. Such as the history about America, Howard Zinn had taken about the
reality of America history. The reason why Howard Zinn revealed the truth of
America history is that because he had joint in world war II as a soldier and
he worked as a bomber. After it he feel regret with his bed behavior and he
want to change it. So that he do not like about Radical and he reveal about the
truth, but because he has different ideology. He did not reveal the truth about who is the real discoverer of
America.
Here I will tell about the
weakness of Howard Zinn.
The weakness of Howard Zinn is he did not reveal about who is the discoverer of
America. That may couse his religion and his ideology. Howard Zinn is a jew,
because of that he just analyze about Columbus. He did not analyze who is the
real discoverer of America. Actually the discoverer of America is a muslim. It
can be known by many opinions. There are many opinions of scientists about sprung
up that the American continent is discovered by laksmana Zheng. This is
confirmed as the discovery of a copy of the 600 -year -old map in a thrift
store. The incident threatens Columbus as the discoverer of the truth, because
it proved that people from China who managed to discover America.
The document came from 18th
century , which is a copy of the 1418 map made Admiral Cheng Ho , which shows
in detail the new world . On the other hand claimed evidence that China Lakshman’s
map the Western Hemisphere (western hemisphere) more than 70 years before
Columbus. This is a published author Gavin Menzies in his new book " who
Discovered America ", which was launched ahead of the anniversary of
Columbus in 2013. Menzies believes that Columbus had a copy of the map of Cheng
Ho when wading the ocean to America. Menzies in his book mentioned that the
wonderful fleet of ships led by China's Zheng sailed around the mainland of
South America, 100 years before Ferdinand Megellen. The first person to sail
from Europe to Asia, the first to sail the Pacific Ocean, and the first to lead
an expedition around the world.
Another data is about a muslim
historian and geographer , Abu Hasan al - Mas'udi on travel writing 956 years
of Muslim Spain in the year 889 AD expedition Muslim Spain in the year voyage
that departed from Delba port ( the same port with the Columbus expedition
start ) , and sailed for months towards the West . Then they discovered a vast
land and they also trade with the natives in the area, after it returned again
to Europe. Al - Mas'udi describe the land in the map which is phenomenal, he
referred to the land as "the Mainland Unknown" or land without a name.
Noted Muslim Spain has been twice
on an expedition to America. First, in the year 999 AD by Ibn Farrukh of
Granada and the second by Al - Idrisi in 1100 M. Al - Idrisi noted a group of
Muslims sailing westward from Lisbon for 31 days and docked on an island in the
Caribbean. They are held captive by Native Americans in the islands for a few
days. After a few days they were released due to negotiations with one of the
locals intermediaries who understand the Arabic language. They went back to al
- Andalus and then tell what they experienced. Interesting point of this event
is the locals who understand the Arabic language. Of course it shows frequent
contacts between the locals (Americans) with the Arabs.
That is the bed thing from Howard Zinn.
Actually if he wants to be the good historian he has to tell it all, because it
can make a history to be more clearly.
Conclusion
Howard Zinn is a good
historian, because Howard Zinn revealed bravely about the truth and he deny the
history of Columbus who some people know about it as a discoverer of America.
He had revealed that Columbus is a killer, violent, and evil man who came to
America only for taking gold from there. But
he has weakness because he did not reveal about who is the discoverer of America.
