Class Review 7
What Goes on Between Reality and Theory
The atmosphere still goes on and
on. Still in talking about
literacy. Before going to the main
discussion in this class review, I would like to show that some theories that
exist in the writing class is really happen in the reality. Today is a great day, I had a golden
opportunity in this morning, 9 a.m, in Rektorat Building (3rd
floor). There was a special guest. A linguist from IOWA University, William D
Davies. Now he concerns in research in
Badui-West Java, he learns and researches on how Madurese and Javanese use the
language. The theme was linguistic and
he explained the notions very detail in an hour season.
From the whole presentation, I got a
connected link between Mr.Davies and what I have been learned in writing class:
1.
In the first
meeting of writing class, there was a notion from Hyland: 2003. “Learning in the second language is one of
the most challenging aspects of second language learning. Even for those who speak English as the first
language, the ability to write affectively is something that requires
specialized instruction.” This notion
also told in this morning when Mr.Davies told us there are complexities in
writing especially for English as the foreign language (EFL). There are many culture will affect someone’s
mind, and someone’s do, also someone actualize themselves in writing will be
influenced by the culture itself. Additionally,
when my host in the writing class, Mr.Bumela told that the first language (L1)
is the foundation for the second language(L2), meaning that environment will
set up a whole people do and write.
2.
Hyland also told
that literacy is something we do. As
long as language takes a part in linguistic.
It also will be part in the literacy zone. Mr.Davies showed human being needs a
language, language is a window through human mind. As a human being, usually we actualize
ourselves through speaking in several languages. Language is something people do in everyday,
day and night. Even though, language is
complicated but he told that every language is important, and surprisingly he
thought that Madurese and Javanese are interesting and important view. He sees that Madurese has different role in
using language, and Javanese as well.
All of these interesting make me proud
as the learner. Not only what a have
been learned is connected with an expert but also because he see some culture
is an interesting thing to be pointed out.
For about 7 years he learned in Javanese language, and as the one of
Indonesian I think this is the time to Indonesian to be proud.
Let’s turn to the class
There are some points missing in my class review
before:
1.
Ideology
Ideology: Set of believe
(Hyland: 2006) since there are no neutral in
literacy, ideology must be involved in literacy. Hyland told that identity of the author is
like performance. Identity is something
we do; not something we have. Almost
everything we say or write, in fact, says something about us and the kind of
relationship we want to establish with others.
Someone’s ideology will affect the environment through their
written. In such situations
students/readers are often uncertain about who they are expected to be, and
often feel more constructed by their text than constructing them. They adopt such identity/ideology. Essentially, people do not define themselves
only by one group membership and belong to different groups, so that their
commitment and experiences often overlap and perhaps conflict. This is how the way socio cultural: gender,
social class, age, religion, ethnicity, regional background are the keys aspect
in influencing someone ideology authority identity.
2.
History
History like poets, uncovers in ever new situations,
the human possibilities here to fore hidden.
There is a connection between history and poetry, history will show the
fact and it is a mission of the poets as well.
Since history affect culture in society, so language takes a big part in
the cycles. Language is always improved
from year to year and specific teaching material will become increasingly
available. Discipline lavations raises a
number of key issues concerning what it mean to interact within a discipline,
the connection between knowledge and discourse, and the influence of the
communities and cultures on communications.
From the class I found
an interesting thing in how historian, linguist, and poet work together to show
the truth.
Special Rectangle
Three of them have a
task in discovering the truth rather than invents. They are likely being someone who bring the
truth behind the story rather than being pioneer for something new. Reality that always be an object for history
is also is a big mission for poet, as a poet they should let the reader or
listener knows about truths, they must refuse the truths before hand, truths
already ‘Obvious’ because floating in the surface. This case also happens in linguist, they tell
the truth in different area, in academic area.
In each member in
special rectangle, we have several points as the object should be pointed
out. There are meaning, values, and
views in social relations, belief system, custom, and habits and the usage of
the material world and its object.
Mikko Lehtonen also
stated that literacy is a part of human’s construction. Human are growing with all the symbols of
literacy, they are affected and constructed by them. Like in daily life, when human being got the
morning paper, the favorite TV show and the novel by the bed produce a certain
sense of order. This thing participates
in the construction of our everyday lives and ourselves in many ways we tend to
overlook for the very reason of their commonness.
So that I can conclude
that the special rectangle tackles their job s tattler. They are all in one package, go together in
showing the truth history, theory and reality.
They have a gun, namely literacy that can make them, not
invincible. They use the symbol of life
to understand values and ideology. They
read and analyze what happen in the reality and they show what should be showed
to the people in the world, that’s why I called them special.
Thank you,
Susi Nurjanah
