Howard Zinn Cares about the Changes
“History is important. If you don't know history it is as if
you were born yesterday. And if you were born yesterday, anybody up there in a
position of power can tell you anything, and you have no way of
checking up on it.”

INTRODUCTION
Story is one of the crucial things in our life. As the statement in above said that history
is important. A light emitted by Howard
Zinn to a historical fact regarding the truth of the America. The man who changed the history in the world
is Howard Zinn. As he said in above that
history is important, even crucial one in Zinn’s live or another person in the
world. Howard Zinn is a brave man. He successfully changed the history that has
been embedded in society. Trough his
article, Zinn believe that he can change the history into the truth. This paper offers a critical insight or
perspective on Howard Zinn’s article entitled is “Speaking Truth to Power with
Books.”
SUMMARY
There are several basic points that Zinn wrote in his
article. First, Howard Zinn is a radical historian from America who explained
about the truth of mystery Columbus on his article “Speaking Truth to Power
with Books.” He success to change what the society thought about the man who
discover of the America, Christopher Columbus.
From his literation, Howard Zinn success to reveal the truth about
Columbus where only a few people knew about that. Howard Zinn believe that from the book, everybody
can find many knowledge that they do not know before.
Second, Howard
Zinn is a man that not agrees about the truth that Columbus is a kind man. He changed the perspective that many people
have known about Columbus in his article, “Speaking Truth to Power with Books.” Although many people opposite him, he still
in his argument. Howard zinn is a brave
man, in that article, he explore about the weakness of Columbus. He written that Columbus as a murderer, a torturer,
a kidnapper, a mutilator and a greedy man looking for gold. Many people disagree with him, especially
American because American trust that Columbus is their hero as Morison’s
statement on his book, Columbus is a man that found America, but Howard Zinn
believe that his article can changed American perspective about Columbus
through from his article, “Speaking Truth to Power with Books.” He believes that the book can realize the
wrong truth and reveal the truth about Columbus.
CRITIQUE
There are four points on Columbus that are neglected in Zinn’s
article. First, the weakness about Howard Zinn’s
critic to Columbus is he did not put the real discoverer of America, he also
did not mention many reasons that Columbus is not discoverer of America. The truth is better if adds some facts and
evidences that can support his statement about Columbus. In the other hand, I myself agree with Howard
Zinn’s statement about Columbus that Columbus is a murderer, a torturer, a
kidnapper, a mutilator and a greedy man looking for gold, because in the others
sources that related to history about Columbus, almost all of that said that
Columbus is not good man. Unfortunately,
Howard Zinn less to clear all about the mysteries of America and who is the
real discoverer of that Continent.
There are the people who amazed to Howard Zinn because
of his courage to reveal about Columbus such as Sean Wilentz and Noam
Chomsky. Noam Chomsky is so admired with
figure of Zinn, because he believes that Zinn is one person who has more
courage to change the consciousness the history of Columbus. Chomsky said that “He changed the consciousness of a generation” with ‘he’ refers to
Howard Zinn. But, although Howard Zinn
was successful to uncover the history of Columbus and was seen as a brave man,
on the other hand I took the view that Howard Zinn is a radical historian. Because of that, he did not mention that the
real fact for who the real discovering the America.
He also did not dare to reveal about the inventor of
the America in addition to Columbus. I
believe that his radicalization made him was not aware of the history that
still needed to be peeled and dug as deep as possible. Whereas, the fact is
very important for the truth emerged.
Changed the truth about history that was written by Howard Zinn in his article
was not complete. The truth should be
disclosed and properly enforced rightly, explicitly, and clearly. All of the society have to know about that. Something that missing in Howard Zinn’s article
that explained about Columbus is the truth about the real discoverer the
America, and many resources stated that the real discoverer the America is a
Muslim.
This is the sequences of people who came in America,
as well as shortage of evidence to add to the statement Howard Zinn in his book
about Columbus.

Khashshash bin Said bin Aswad landed
and discovered America in the year 889 AD,
v
Amerigo Vespucci landed or discovered
America in the year 1499-1500 AD, and
v
Christopher Columbus landed and
discovered America in the year 1492 AD.
That is the little evidences the truth history about
America, and Howard Zinn missing to explain it.
Everyone have to know about this fact!
Zinn just reveal all about Columbus crime, he missing to put this
fact. Zinn did not explain more about
the real discover America is from Muslim person who want to spread Islam in
America. Even Howard Zinn give the light
in historical in the world, beside I
support his statement about Columbus, I also feel a bit disappointed because of
incompleteness of facts about the history and the lack of references that Zinn
include to strengthen his statement.
Second,
Howard Zinn did not explain about the background of Columbus. For example, he did not explain what the real
purposes Columbus came to America and do the crime in America. He neglected to
put on his article that the main purpose of Columbus came to America is looking
for some gold. Columbus admit that when
he arrived in America but he believe that that continent is Indies, he tortured
the indigenous of America, hanging them and whip them just to know the
important information that he need: “where is the gold?” He wrote in his
article that Columbus is a greedy man looking for gold, but he neglected to
write this fact.
Third, indeed
through of his literacy, Howard Zinn successfully found the truth of the actual
figure of Columbus, Howard Zinn knew that Columbus is a murderer, a torturer, a
kidnapper, a mutilator and a greedy man looking for gold on the books that he
read, but he does not specify either the title or author of the books. Howard
Zinn only revealed the facts about Columbus’s crime without included
specification for example what the specification crime that Columbus do. In the other words, Zinn did not include any references
or evidences in order to reinforce his statement about Columbus.
Fourth, Howard Zinn less of literatures
and references to strengthen his argument about Columbus in his article. As we know that the readers perhaps will feel
confused at the first time they read Zinn’s article. The reader just knows that Columbus is a hero
who discovers America, but in Zinn’s article was written that Columbus is a
criminal. In Zinn’s article, he just write that Columbus ia a murderer, a
torturer, a kidnapper, a mutilator and a greedy man looking for gold just for
many books that he read. To overcome
this possibility problem occurs, Zinn should be add some evidence, literatures,
and references from others source to strengthen this statement and to make the
reader not confuse while they read it.
CONCLUSION
Depended to all of the reasons in above, the
conclusion is one of the man who was changed about the history in the world
about the fact of Columbus, Howard Zinn is missing that the history should be
clearly to be understandable by everyone in the world. Perhaps the person who has low literation and
rarely read the book about facts of historical, if they read book of Howard
Zinn they will feel confused and not believe that Columbus is not kind people
and not hero who discovered America.
Because of that, the truth about the facts of historical should be
clearly and more detail explained by provided many evidences and references
from other sources to strengthen the statement.
Once again that emphasized here is that the truth should be enforced with
very clear.
